The Emily Hall Tremaine Lecture in Contemporary Art

with Deborah Hay

Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art

November 14, 2024

Internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Deborah Hay returned to reflect on her six-decade career in dance, presenting a lecture and performance in the galleries. Hay played a central role in the development of postmodern dance in the early 1960s and has left an indelible mark on the development of the field. Noted for welcoming participation from untrained dancers, Hay worked with volunteers in realizing her works Deborah Hay and a Large Number of People from Hartford and Ten Circle Dances at the Wadsworth in the 1970s. This program was held in the same gallery that Hay activated in 1970 during the first performance of her work at the museum.

Presented with support from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation and with additional support provided by the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation Fund at the Wadsworth Atheneum.
