The Institute of Contemporary American Music (ICAM)

The Hartt School, University of Hartford

September 2020–April 2021

The Institute of Contemporary American Music (ICAM) is a visiting artist series housed within the Composers' Seminar at The Hartt School. ICAM was founded in 1948 and has been responsible for bringing many of the giants of American classical music to The Hartt School over the last seven decades. Past guests have included John Cage, Aaron Copland, Milton Babbitt, Alvin Lucier, David Lang, Tristan Perich, Meredith Monk, and many more.

In conjunction with the Hartt 100 Celebration, we worked to revitalize and expand the series while also reenvisioning it in a virtual setting to meet the restrictions of the pandemic. The end result is a 28-week course that provides the students special events, peer presentations, and direct engagement with 19 internationally recognized composers, musicians, and artist. The series is also reaching a substantially wider audience, allowing for members of the campus community, surrounding local communities, and guests from around the world to join. Participants have logged in from 9 countries and locations across the United Sates.
